Clashes Erupt in Manipur’s Kangpokpi as Mob Attacks Police and Administrative Offices

January 4, 2025: Tensions escalated in Kangpokpi district on Friday evening, January 3, 2025, as a mob attacked the offices of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP). This unrest came amid growing local opposition to the presence of Central forces in Saibol village, situated near the border with Imphal East district.

The violence followed a 48-hour standoff after Central forces reportedly took control of “community bunkers” in Saibol, a move that sparked discontent among the locals. Protestors demanded the district police intervene and remove the Central forces from the area.

As tensions reached a boiling point, demonstrators marched to the SP’s office in the evening and attempted to seal it. A group of protestors also tried to force entry into the DC’s office. Video footage shared widely on social media showed some individuals dressed in battle fatigues, with some carrying weapons.

Clashes broke out when police resisted the protestors, leading to stone pelting and chaos. A few people sustained injuries during the altercation, and several vehicles at the SP’s office were damaged in the unrest. Images circulating online also showed the SP with injuries to the forehead, though no official confirmation has been provided regarding the severity of the injury.

The situation highlights the fragile state of peace in the Kuki-majority district, with locals voicing frustration over the perceived intrusion by Central forces. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident or outline steps to address the community's grievances.

As of now, the district remains tense, and security measures have been heightened to prevent further escalation.
