MHA Directs Security Forces to Restore Peace in Manipur, Extends AFSPA Amid Rising Violence

November 16, 2024: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced that security forces have been instructed to take immediate and necessary steps to restore peace and order in the state of Manipur, which has been grappling with violence and unrest. In a statement issued on Saturday, the MHA described the current security situation in the region as "fragile" due to ongoing clashes between armed groups from the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.

The MHA highlighted that these violent incidents have resulted in the loss of lives and significant disruption to public order. As part of its efforts to curb the violence, the ministry has warned that strict legal action will be taken against those engaging in violent acts or attempting to destabilize the region further.

In a significant move to strengthen the investigation of these violent incidents, the MHA has handed over key cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), ensuring that the probe into the unrest is comprehensive and effective. The public has also been urged to avoid spreading rumors, maintain peace, and cooperate with security forces to help restore normalcy.

Additionally, in a bid to stabilize the security situation, the MHA extended the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) across six police jurisdictions in five districts of Manipur. This decision, which came after a thorough review of the state's security conditions, will remain in effect until March 31, 2025. The areas affected by this extension include Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong, and Moirang, covering the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur.

The continued deployment of AFSPA, which grants special powers to the military and paramilitary forces, reflects the ongoing volatility in the region. The MHA’s latest measures come amid mounting concerns over the escalating violence and instability in the state, as efforts to restore peace continue.
