Sanjay Raut Sentenced to 15 Days in Prison for Defamation Case

September 26, 2024: Sanjay Raut, Rajya Sabha MP and leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), has been sentenced to 15 days in jail following a conviction in a defamation case. The metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai's Mazgaon also imposed a fine of ₹ 25,000 on Raut. The case was brought forth by Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.

Dr. Somaiya accused Raut of making baseless allegations, claiming that she and her husband were involved in a ₹ 100 crore scam concerning the construction and maintenance of public toilets in Mira Bhayandar. According to Vivekanand Gupta, advocate for Dr. Somaiya, the court deemed Raut's statements to the media as inherently defamatory and harmful to her reputation.

"The statements made by the accused are per se defamatory and were intended to malign my character in the eyes of the general public," the complaint stated.
