Saif Ali Khan's Attacker Arrested in Thane: Evidence Points to Bangladeshi Nationality

January 19, 2025: The Mumbai Police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the man accused of attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence on January 16. Shehzad, who confessed to the crime, was apprehended early Sunday morning at a labour camp near a metro construction site in Thane's Hiranandani Estate.

The 30-year-old, employed by a housekeeping agency in Thane, allegedly entered Saif Ali Khan’s residence with the intention of committing burglary. After three days of extensive searching, the police tracked him down and announced that he will be presented in court for judicial custody.

According to police officials, documents seized during the arrest suggest that Shehzad is a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally five to six months ago. He reportedly used multiple aliases, including Bijoy Das, Vijay Das, Mohammad Illyas, and BJ, while working various jobs in Mumbai and Thane during this period.

The suspect was said to be following news about the attack closely and had switched off his phone to avoid being tracked. His movements were pieced together from CCTV footage, which showed him descending the stairs from Saif Ali Khan’s home shortly after the incident. Further footage identified him at Dadar railway station.

The investigation saw Mumbai Police putting up posters of Shehzad across Mumbai and neighbouring areas to aid in the search. A breakthrough came when a suspect was detained in Chhattisgarh's Durg district based on a resemblance to Shehzad. However, upon questioning, it was confirmed that the individual was not connected to the case.

This high-profile incident involving one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors has drawn significant attention. While Saif Ali Khan is reported to be recovering, the investigation into the attack continues as authorities dig deeper into the accused's background and motives.
