OCTOBER 10, 2024 — Ratan Tata, one of India’s most revered industrialists and former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Mr. Tata will be honored with a state funeral, and a day of mourning has been declared to pay tribute to the titan of industry. His final rites will be held in Mumbai today, with Home Minister Amit Shah set to attend.

The Tata Group announced his death in a statement, but did not disclose a specific cause. Mr. Tata had been undergoing treatment in a critical care unit of a Mumbai hospital, according to reports.

Ratan Tata, known for his transformative leadership, helmed the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. During this period, he expanded the conglomerate’s global footprint by acquiring marquee international brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea. Under his stewardship, the company’s profits soared 50-fold, and Tata products became household names around the world. Despite this global success, his impact at home remained unparalleled, with Tata products embedded in nearly every facet of daily life for millions of Indians.

A man of few words, Mr. Tata was lauded not just for his business acumen, but also for his commitment to philanthropy and nation-building. Unlike other industrialists, the majority shares of Tata Sons, the conglomerate’s holding company, are held by philanthropic trusts—an unusual model that underscores Mr. Tata’s lifelong commitment to giving back.

His departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy, shaped by integrity, compassion, and an indomitable drive to serve society, will continue to inspire generations to come.

The late Mr. Tata’s body will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point from 10 am to 4 pm today, where people can pay their last respects. The cremation is set to take place in the Worli area later in the day.
