President Murmu Visits Siachen Base Camp, Honors Indian Troops

September 26, 2024: In a poignant visit, President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to Indian soldiers at the Siachen War Memorial on Thursday. The memorial commemorates the sacrifices made by Army personnel since the onset of Operation Meghdoot in April 1984, marking the beginning of India’s control over the Siachen Glacier, recognized as the world's highest battlefield.

Dressed in Army fatigues, President Murmu addressed the troops stationed in the harsh and remote environment of Siachen. As the supreme commander of the armed forces, she expressed deep pride in their unwavering commitment to the nation. “All citizens salute your bravery,” she stated, acknowledging the extreme challenges faced by soldiers in this unforgiving terrain.

Highlighting the extraordinary resilience of the Indian Armed Forces, President Murmu remarked, “Since Operation Meghdoot commenced, our brave soldiers and officers have secured this region against all odds. They endure severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and temperatures plunging to minus 50 degrees, demonstrating exceptional sacrifice and vigilance in their duty to protect our motherland.”

Upon her arrival at the Thoise airfield, President Murmu was warmly welcomed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier BD Mishra.
