October 8, 2024: In a dramatic show of solidarity, over 45 senior doctors and faculty members at RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital have tendered their resignations in support of their junior colleagues protesting the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital's premises in August.
The mass resignation highlights growing frustration among the medical staff regarding the government's lack of response to the demands raised by the junior doctors. The senior doctors emphasized that there has been "no development" in the investigation into the tragic incident, further fueling their decision to step down.
"The health of the protesting doctors who are currently on a hunger strike is deteriorating. We urge the government to engage in dialogue and reconciliation with the doctors on strike," stated the senior doctors in their resignation letter to the hospital administration.
The statement expressed concern over the wellbeing of the protesting junior doctors, whose conditions have reportedly worsened due to their ongoing hunger strike. "If the situation does not improve, we may consider individual resignations as well," they added.
In a show of unity, the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), a collective representing various medical professionals, also released a statement expressing their support for the junior doctors and their ongoing protests.
