January 20, 2025: In a landmark judgment, the Neyyattinkara Additional District Sessions Court sentenced Greeshma to death for the murder of 23-year-old Sharon Raj in 2022. The case, which garnered widespread public attention, has been termed as one of the "rarest of rare" cases by the court.
Greeshma, found guilty of poisoning Sharon, faced the verdict today after being convicted on January 17. The court ruled out leniency due to her age, stating that the gravity of the crime overshadowed any consideration of her youth or academic promise.
Her uncle, Nirmal Kumar, who was also implicated in the case, received a three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for his role as an accomplice and for tampering with evidence. However, Greeshma's mother, Sindhu, was acquitted due to lack of evidence linking her to the crime.
The defence had pleaded for a lesser sentence, arguing that Greeshma was a young woman with potential for reform and had already shown signs of improvement during her incarceration. However, the court maintained that the heinous nature of the crime warranted the death penalty. It remarked that her betrayal of Sharon’s trust set a detrimental example for society.
The court also praised the investigation team for its meticulous work, noting that the probe was conducted with exceptional intelligence, leading to a strong and irrefutable case against the accused.
This case has sparked widespread discussions on the justice system’s approach to sentencing in cases involving young offenders, as well as the societal implications of such crimes. Sharon Raj’s family expressed relief and a sense of closure following the judgment, though they emphasized that no verdict could truly undo their loss.
Greeshma now becomes one of the youngest women in India to be handed a death sentence, a fact that underscores the severity of her actions and the court’s commitment to delivering justice in the face of brutal crimes.
