Kangana Ranaut Served Court Notice Over Controversial Independence Remark

October 8, 2024: Kangana Ranaut, a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Sabha MP, has received a court notice regarding her controversial statement asserting that India achieved true independence in 2014. The notice was issued by the special MP-MLA court in Jabalpur during a hearing presided over by Judge Vishweshwari Mishra.

The legal action stems from a petition filed by advocate Amit Kumar Sahu, who first raised the issue in 2021. According to Sahu, he initially lodged a complaint with the Adhartal police station but faced inaction, prompting him to escalate the matter to the Superintendent of Police and subsequently the High Court.

Sahu's petition argues that Ranaut's comments undermine the sacrifices made by numerous freedom fighters throughout India’s struggle for independence. "My main objection is that India got independence after the sacrifice of many freedom fighters, but Kangana described it as ‘bheekh’ (alms). She claimed that true freedom came only after 2014," Sahu stated.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for November 5.
