Journalist Found Dead in Chhattisgarh Tank Days After Corruption Expose

January 4, 2025: The body of 28-year-old journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was found in a septic tank on January 3, just days after he exposed corruption in a ₹120-crore road construction project in Bastar. Mukesh, who worked for a local news channel, had been missing since January 1.

His body was discovered on the premises of contractor Suresh Chandrakar in Chattanpara, Bijapur district. Mukesh's investigative report had recently revealed alleged irregularities involving Suresh, prompting a government inquiry into the contractor’s dealings.

According to Mukesh's elder brother, Yukesh Chandrakar, the journalist had attended a meeting arranged by Suresh’s brother, Ritesh, at the contractor's property before going missing. When Mukesh’s phone remained switched off, a missing person report was filed.

Police investigations led to the discovery of Mukesh’s body. A senior officer stated, “We scanned CCTV footage and tracked Mukesh’s last known location. His body was found in the evening.”

The police have arrested Suresh Chandrakar in Hyderabad and Ritesh Chandrakar in Delhi. A laborer accused of assisting in the disposal of the body has also been taken into custody. Authorities are interrogating several others connected to the contractor's circle.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the incident, describing it as a tragic loss for journalism and society. “The murder of Mukesh Chandrakar is heartbreaking. The culprits will not be spared. I have directed authorities to ensure swift arrests and the harshest punishment,” Sai stated in a tweet.

Bastar’s contractor lobby, known for wielding influence and intimidating dissenting voices, has come under scrutiny. Journalists covering corruption in the region often face harassment and threats, with Mukesh’s death highlighting the risks faced by reporters who seek to expose the truth.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have assured that justice will be served.
