November 26, 2024: India marks a historic milestone today as the nation observes the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution, with year-long celebrations set to unfold under the campaign theme "Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan." November 26, 2024, signifies the day when the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution in 1949, laying the foundation for the Republic of India, which came into effect on January 26, 1950.
The day’s significance is underscored by a special event at the Central Hall of Parliament, where President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. This speech will mark the commencement of a series of commemorative activities throughout the year to honor the Constitution and its framers.
The government’s campaign, “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan,” aims to celebrate the invaluable contributions of the Constitution’s architects while reaffirming the core values enshrined within it. Through various programs and initiatives, the campaign emphasizes the importance of constitutional values such as justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, which continue to guide India’s democratic framework.
The event is attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also release the annual report of the Indian Judiciary for the year 2023-24 and address the gathering. Additionally, a commemorative coin and stamp will be unveiled, both dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption. The occasion will also see the release of two books: “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey”, offering insights into the history and evolution of India’s Constitution.
The Central Hall of Parliament holds a special place in Indian history, as it was here that the Constituent Assembly first met on December 9, 1946. The event was marked by an elegant decoration, with bright lamps adorning the ceilings, symbolizing the birth of a new democratic era for the nation.
This year, as India celebrates the 75th anniversary of its Constitution, the country is not only honoring the visionaries who shaped the document but also reflecting on its enduring role in shaping India’s democratic identity and governance. The Constitution Day celebrations are a reminder of the values that have steered India’s growth and its continued journey towards a more inclusive and just society.
