High Court Overturns Travel Permission for Indrani Mukerjea

September 27, 2024: The Bombay High Court has overturned a special court's approval allowing Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive accused of her daughter Sheena Bora's murder, to travel abroad. Justice Shyam Chandak granted a petition from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing serious concerns over Mukerjea's ongoing trial and the risk of her fleeing the country.

“The petition is allowed. The impugned order is set aside,” the court stated, highlighting the gravity of the charges Mukerjea faces.

In July, a special CBI court had granted Mukerjea permission to travel to Europe for ten days to manage bank-related documentation following her divorce from former media mogul Peter Mukerjea. However, the High Court found the earlier ruling to be unreasonable and unsustainable.

Justice Chandak noted that Mukerjea could complete necessary tasks from India, emphasizing that relevant authorities should assist her in doing so. The court clarified that its decision did not comment on the merits of the case, but rather focused on the implications of allowing her to travel.
