Government Initiates Procurement of 20,000 New Anti-Tank Guided Missiles for Indian Army

October 11, 2024: The Defence Ministry has formally issued a Request for Information (RFI) to procure over 20,000 new-generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), along with 1,500 launch systems and simulators, to bolster the operational capabilities of the Indian Army. This significant initiative aims to enhance the Army’s ability to target and neutralize armored vehicles effectively.

The procurement is set to fall under the “Buy (India-IDDM)” category, which emphasizes indigenous development. According to a source in the Defence Ministry, this approach mandates at least 60% of the content to be sourced domestically, ensuring that a minimum of 50% of the total contract value supports Indian industries.

The RFI will aid in finalizing the system's qualitative requirements (SQRs), determining the procurement category, and identifying potential Indian vendors capable of delivering the new-generation ATGMs and their launchers within four years of contract award.

These advanced ATGMs are designed for diverse operational terrains, including plains, deserts, high altitudes (up to 5,500 meters or 18,000 feet), as well as coastal regions and islands. Their strategic deployment will focus on enhancing defenses along India’s western border with Pakistan and northern border with China.

Importantly, the new missiles are required to operate effectively in both day and night conditions, adapting to a variety of weather scenarios such as rain, fog, humidity, and dust. They must also perform reliably in extreme temperatures ranging from -45°C to 45°C.
