October 7, 2024: The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has officially suspended the membership of Delhi’s National Zoological Park due to serious concerns regarding the welfare of Shankar, an African elephant reportedly kept in chains. The decision, announced on Monday, highlights ongoing issues related to the treatment and living conditions of the lone elephant.
Shankar, a gift from Zimbabwe to former Indian President Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1996, has been a resident of the Delhi Zoo since his arrival. He has lived alone since the passing of his companion, another African elephant named Bambai, in 2005. The welfare of Shankar has come under scrutiny, prompting WAZA to demand detailed information about his care.
In a recent correspondence, WAZA expressed disappointment over the responses received from the zoo regarding Shankar’s treatment, previously requested on May 24 and July 24. The organization has set a deadline of April 7, 2025, for the Delhi Zoo to develop a WAZA-approved plan for Shankar’s relocation or to address the ongoing welfare concerns. Failure to comply could lead to permanent termination of the zoo's membership.
During the suspension, the Delhi Zoo will forfeit all membership rights and benefits, including participation in international conferences and committees, which could impact its standing in the global conservation community.
Zoo Director Sanjeet Kumar has stated that the zoo will respond to the suspension and address the raised concerns. The Delhi Zoo now faces significant pressure to ensure the wellbeing of Shankar, as animal welfare advocates call for immediate action to improve his living conditions.
