Diljit Dosanjh Faces Legal Heat Over Alcohol-Themed Songs After Ludhiana New Year’s Concert

January 1, 2025: Popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh's New Year’s Eve concert in Ludhiana has sparked legal controversy following a complaint about his alcohol-themed songs. The concert, part of his Dil-Luminati India Tour, marked the grand finale of the three-month-long nationwide series of performances.

The complaint was filed by Punditrao Dharenavar, an assistant professor from Chandigarh, who expressed concerns over the influence of Dosanjh's songs on young audiences, particularly children. The Deputy Director of the Women and Child Department, Government of Punjab, subsequently issued a formal notice to Ludhiana’s District Commissioner, urging action against the singer.

The notice specifically sought to ban songs such as Patiala Pegg, 5 Tara Theke, and Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya), which Dharenavar claims glorify alcohol consumption. The complaint further criticized Dosanjh for performing such tracks while wearing a pagadi (turban), which Dharenavar argued should not be associated with promoting negative values.

This controversy is not new for Dosanjh, who has previously faced legal challenges over similar issues. In 2019, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed authorities to prohibit public performances of songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence, citing their harmful impact on impressionable children. Dharenavar has threatened to escalate the matter to the High Court if necessary.

During his concert tour, Dosanjh also faced scrutiny in Hyderabad and Indore for related issues. Despite this, the Dil-Luminati India Tour has been a massive success, with tickets selling out within minutes at each venue. The Ludhiana concert, announced last-minute on December 23, 2024, was no exception.

Earlier in the year, during a performance in Ahmedabad, Dosanjh publicly addressed the criticism surrounding his songs. He pledged to stop creating alcohol-themed music if the Indian government enacted a nationwide liquor ban.

While legal challenges continue to follow the singer, Dosanjh’s fans remain unwavering in their support, ensuring his concerts remain sell-out events. However, the debate over the social impact of his music adds a layer of complexity to his growing popularity.
