August 7, 2023: Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday arrived in Parliament after Lok Sabha Secretariat restored his membership.
The Supreme Court in an interim order on Friday stayed the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case over the 'Modi Surname' remark.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury along with many more party leaders exchanged sweets after Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership got reinstated on Monday.
Many party workers were seen celebrating, dancing and raising slogans in favour of Gandhi outside the residence of Sonia Gandhi.
Taking to Twitter, Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The decision to reinstate Shri @RahulGandhi as an MP is a welcome step. It brings relief to the people of India, and especially to Wayanad. Whatever time is left of their tenure, BJP and Modi Govt should utilise that by concentrating on actual governance rather than denigrating Democracy by targeting opposition leaders.”
Earlier, the Gujarat High Court in its order declined to stay his conviction in the case in which Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by the Surat Court. After his conviction in the case, the congress leader was also disqualified as Lok Sabha Member from Kerala's Wayanad on March 24.
