Bengal Doctors Resume Duties Partially After 42-Day Protest Over Rape Case

September 21, 2024: After a prolonged standoff lasting 42 days, junior doctors in West Bengal have partially resumed their duties at government-run hospitals, marking a significant development in a protest that has drawn widespread attention. On Saturday morning, doctors began attending to essential and emergency services across state-run facilities, though they are still refraining from working in the outpatient departments (OPD).

The protests began on August 9, following the tragic discovery of the body of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The junior doctors have been vocal in their demands for justice for their deceased colleague, as well as the removal of the state health secretary and other key officials, whom they allege are complicit in the case.

While the doctors have returned to work, they have issued a stern warning: they will monitor the situation closely and wait for seven days for the administration to address their demands. If no action is taken, they have threatened to initiate another round of "cease work."
