Andhra Pradesh Pledges Rs 25 Lakh Compensation for Tirupati Stampede Victims

January 9, 2025: The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the victims of the tragic stampede at the Vaikuntha Ekadashi Darshan Token Issuance Center on Wednesday night.

The incident, which occurred near the Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan ticketing centers in Tirupati, claimed the lives of at least six individuals and left several others injured. A team of state ministers, including Home Minister Anitha, Revenue Minister Angani Satya Prasad, and Endowments Minister Anam Rama Narayana Reddy, visited Tirupati on Thursday morning to meet the victims’ families and inspect the situation. The team also reviewed the arrangements at Ruia Hospital, where the injured were being treated, and assured families of comprehensive government support.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it "unfortunate" and pledging to implement strict measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. He also directed officials to provide assistance to families from both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu who were affected by the incident.

The state government has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede. CCTV footage from the token issuance centers is being reviewed to identify any lapses, and strict action will be taken against those found negligent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The stampede, which unfolded during a rush for tickets, has raised concerns about crowd management and safety protocols during major religious events. The tragedy has left a somber mood in Tirupati, a town known for its spiritual significance and bustling pilgrimage activity.
