January 23, 2025: Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma, actor Rajpal Yadav, choreographer-director Remo D'Souza, and singer-comedian Sugandha Mishra have reported receiving threatening emails, according to Mumbai Police.
The email, signed by an individual identifying as Bishnu, claimed: "We have been monitoring your recent activities, and we believe it is imperative that we bring a sensitive matter to your attention. This is not a publicity stunt or an attempt to harass you."
The sender urged the celebrities to treat the message with "utmost seriousness and confidentiality," warning of "severe consequences" to their professional and personal lives if the email was ignored. The threat also demanded a response within eight hours, failing which "necessary actions" would be taken.
Acting on complaints filed by the celebrities, police registered cases at the Amboli and Oshiwara police stations. During the preliminary investigation, the email’s IP address was traced to Pakistan, police officials revealed. Further investigations are underway to identify the sender and determine the credibility of the threat.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of public figures in the entertainment industry. It follows closely on the heels of another high-profile attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who was stabbed by an intruder in his Mumbai residence on January 16. The assailant had entered the premises with an intent to steal.
Mumbai Police assured that security arrangements for the affected celebrities would be strengthened as they continue to investigate the matter.
