August 5, 2021: The state on Thursday remembered Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 71st death anniversary with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and others leading the state in paying homage to the first Chief Minister of Assam and Bharat Ratna recipient.



Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Minister of Agriculture Atul Bora, Education Minister Raboj Pegu, Former Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal, among others, also paid floral tributes to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.





“First Chief Minister of Assam and Bharat Ratna recipient Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi played a key role in shaping the State's destiny. I bow my head in reverence to this great soul on his 71st death anniversary today,” CM Sarma tweeted.



CM Sarma further tweeted, “In order to honour his contribution in protecting Assam and making it an integral part of India, and also to keep his legacy alive, we are celebrating the day as 'Karmachari Divas'.”



“Took part in an all-faith prayer held on the occasion. I urge citizens to emulate Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi's ideals and work towards building an Assam of his dream,” he said in another tweet.

Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also wrote: “Tributes to Bharat Ratna, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his Punya Tithi. The first Chief Minister of Assam post Independence, his contribution in keeping the integrity of India and development of the state will remain immortal.”

Gopinath Bordoloi was born on June 10, 1890, and passed away on August 5, 1950. He was a politician and Indian freedom activist who served as the first Chief Minister of Assam.



He was a supporter of the Gandhian principle of non-violence as a political means. Due to his selfless service towards Assam and its people, the then Governor of Assam Jayram Das Doulatram conferred him “Lokpriya,” which means ‘loved by all.’



He was an instrumental force in establishing Gauhati University, High Court of Assam, Assam Medical College, etc. He was also a gifted writer. His contributions, especially for Assam, will forever be commemorated across generation.
