Bye-elections Underway in Five Constituencies Amidst Tight Contests and Security Concerns

November 13, 2024: Bye-elections are taking place today in five constituencies across the state, with a total of 34 candidates contesting for the seats. The constituencies involved are Dhalai, Samuguri, Bihali, Sidli, and Bongaigaon, where over 9 lakh voters are expected to cast their ballots.

In Dhalai, there are 1,97,628 eligible voters spread across 208 polling stations. Bihali has 1,32,578 voters at 154 polling stations, while Sidli has 2,17,236 voters and 203 polling stations. Bongaigaon has 1,82,354 voters, with 246 polling stations, and Samuguri has 1,80,854 voters and 197 polling stations.

The main political contest in these constituencies is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, who are directly competing in Dhalai, Bihali, and Samugurii. In Sidli, the key battle is expected between the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The contest in Bongaigaon is shaping up to be a triangular race, with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Congress, and several independent candidates in the fray.

The election commission has issued an alert following reports of election-related violence in Samuguri, prompting authorities to deploy additional security personnel to maintain peace and ensure the smooth conduct of voting. The security situation is being closely monitored, especially in Samuguri, where there have been clashes between rival political groups in recent days.

With the BJP and Congress both vying for dominance in these regions, the results of today’s by-elections are expected to have significant political implications, not just locally but across the state. Voter turnout and the security situation will be critical in determining the final outcome of these elections.
