January 27, 2025: The second day of the fifth-anniversary celebrations of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) peace accord witnessed significant developments with Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma gracing the event in Kokrajhar. The Chief Minister inaugurated the newly constructed Executive Member (EM) and Member of Council Legislative Assembly (MCLA) hostels under the BTC government. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for the construction of Kokrajhar University, a project anticipated to bolster the region's educational landscape.
During the event, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that the BTR elections would be held before Durga Puja this year. He also revealed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would contest the elections in alliance with the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). This strategic decision reflects the BJP's focus on consolidating its position in the region, particularly ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that BJP's "Mission BTR" is central to the party's aspirations and that it cannot be realized without the support of UPPL. Initially, BJP had planned to contest the BTR elections independently. However, after Dilip Saikia assumed the role of State BJP President, a meeting with UPPL Chief Pramod Boro reshaped the political equation. Following this, Saikia announced the alliance with UPPL, signaling a united front against other contenders in the BTR elections.
Highlighting the importance of cooperation, Chief Minister Sarma stated that Pramod Boro and Dilip Saikia would play pivotal roles in deciding the alliance's roadmap. By entrusting key responsibilities to the presidents of the two parties, Sarma aims to ensure a peaceful and coordinated election process.
The second day of the celebrations not only marked the achievements of the BTR peace accord but also underscored the political dynamics shaping the region's future. The alliance between BJP and UPPL is expected to play a decisive role in the forthcoming elections, setting the stage for a new chapter in BTR's governance.
