August 31, 2020: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is delayed because of the apathy of Assam government. Alleging this, the All Assam Students' Union said the government had intentionally interfered in the NRC process.

Reacting on the 1 year completion of the publication of final NRC, AASU president Dipanka Nath said names of foreigners were included in NRC. Stating that the AASU had been asking for an error-free NRC, he said a close scrutiny of others except the OI category could have given a better result. Nath accused the government of having no sincerity towards implementing the NRC and safeguarding the interest of the indigenous Assamese people.

Hoping that the Supreme Court will give a fair verdict in favour of the Assamese people, he also criticised the present Coordinator for the latter's 'inaction.'

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that when started, everybody expected the NRC to be a crucial document of the Assamese people. He also accused the state government of using the NRC for its political mileage.

The Assam Public Works too slammed the government for the entire fiasco. Its president Abhijit Sharma said that the NRC ultimately proved to be a big zero despite a long wait. He became extra critical of former state coordinator Prateek Hajela and said that the latter had destroyed the entire NRC process. Demanding 100% amendment of NRC, Sharma demanded that the assembly poll be deferred till a new voters list deleting names of all illegal Bangladeshis was prepared.
