Violence Erupts in Bahraich: Internet Suspended as Mob Torches Hospital and Shops During Durga Idol Immersion

October 14, 2024: Violence erupted in the Mahasi area of Bahraich district during a Durga idol immersion procession, leading to widespread unrest and significant property damage. On Sunday, clashes between two communities resulted in the death of one individual and left several others injured.

In response to the escalating violence, local authorities suspended internet services to prevent the spread of misinformation and curb the unrest. Reports indicate that a hospital and multiple shops were set ablaze by a mob on Monday, intensifying fears and chaos in the region.

Police have arrested 30 individuals connected to the incident, while efforts are underway to locate the primary suspects. "We are trying to control the situation," stated Bahraich District Magistrate Monika Rani, as law enforcement utilized lathi charges and tear gas to disperse protestors on Monday morning.

According to Bahraich Superintendent of Police (SP) Vrinda Shukla, the conflict began when the procession passed through a sensitive area. "An argument broke out between the two groups, leading to the tragic shooting of a member of the Hindu community," she explained. This incident sparked the violent protests that followed.

Authorities are urging calm and have called for community cooperation to restore peace in the area.
