October 3, 2024: Prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk made a poignant visit to Rajghat on Wednesday evening, paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi following his release from police detention. Accompanied by fellow activists from Ladakh, Wangchuk expressed gratitude for their release and announced the conclusion of their hunger strike.
Speaking to reporters, Wangchuk revealed that their group had submitted a memorandum to the government, advocating for the protection of Ladakh’s ecology through constitutional measures. He emphasized the importance of the Sixth Schedule, which empowers local governance and resource management.
“Locals should be empowered in the Himalayas because they can best preserve it,” Wangchuk stated, underscoring the need for community involvement in ecological conservation. He further mentioned that the group has been assured of a meeting with top government officials, including the Prime Minister, President, or Home Minister, in the near future.
A senior police officer confirmed the release of Wangchuk and his fellow ‘padayatris,’ who had been detained during their protest. The activists’ demands aim to secure legal protections for Ladakh’s unique environment, emphasizing the critical role of local stewardship in safeguarding the region’s fragile ecosystems.
As Wangchuk concluded his remarks, he reiterated the urgency of their cause and expressed hope for meaningful dialogue with the government in the coming days.
