August 7, 2024  Unfortunately for India at the Olympics, wrestler Vinesh Phogat was eliminated on Wednesday from the 50kg freestyle wrestling competition due to a slight weight issue, despite qualifying for the gold medal match. Vinesh Phogat defeated Japan's Yui Susaki, who is the World No.1 and Tokyo 2020 champion, to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Indian team sadly reports the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg category. Even after the team worked hard overnight, she tipped the scale slightly above 50kg this morning. The Indian Olympic Association stated that they will not make any additional comments before Phogat's gold medal match tonight.

As per competition regulations, she is disqualified for a silver medal, with only the gold and bronze champions remaining in the 50 kg division. An Indian coach, stated that Phogat was discovered to be 100gm overweight this morning. It was reported that Phogat attempted to lose the extra weight by jogging and skipping last night but was unsuccessful.

India currently holds three bronze medals and Phogat's guaranteed medal raised hopes for a silver or gold. Due to Vinesh disqualification, she will not be awarded any medal at the Paris Games. Despite being guaranteed a silver medal, Vinesh's disqualification will leave her with no medal to take home. Vinesh's initial match in the Paris Games could be considered the most challenging. She faced off against Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki, who had never been defeated in her international career and was also a four-time world Olympic champion.
