July 30, 2020: Former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley was awarded 4-year jail term by a Delhi court on Thursday.



The Court pronounced the punishment in the 20-year old defence deal case. Two others also were awarded the same sentence.



The trio were held guilty by the court on July 26.



The case was related to a purported defence deal exposed by the Tehelka magazine.



Codenamed ‘Operation Westend’, the Tehelka sting operation of 2001 showed them purportedly accepting bribe from the journalists who posed as arms dealer. The meetings took place in the official residence of the then defence minister George Fernandes. They were chargesheeted in 2006 and charges against them were framed in 2012.
