February 8, 2021: The Centre has no plan to construct an expressway along the mighty Brahmaputra. This was informed in the Rajya Sabha by road transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday.

Replying to a question of Assam MP Ajit Kr. Bhuyan, Gadkari said "There is no proposal for construction of highways on both sides of the river(Brahmaputra)."

Replying to another query, he said that dredging work of the Brahmaputra is carried out on need basis for smooth navigation of vessels.

Reacting to it, Bhuyan said that the minister's statement exposed the blatant lie of the Assam government.

The Assam government had earlier announced to construct expressway along the Brahmaputra from Sadiya to Dhubri. Even chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal himself launched the survey works of the project 4 years ago.
