August 11, 2020: The people residing in Assam speaking Assamese or any tribal dialect or the local language of the Barak Valley will be considered as indigenous Assamese. This has been suggested by the high-powered committee on Assam Accord Clause 6 that was constituted by the Home Ministry. It also suggested constitutional safeguard for all those people who have come to the state before 1/1/1951.

In a dramatic development, the All Assam Students Union on Tuesday released the 'confidential' report of the Assam Accord Clause 6 review committee. Alleging government of sitting over the report for 5 months, the AASU leadership in a press conference said that whether the report was submitted to the Centre by the state government was still not known.

The Committee suggested several measures for protection of the indigenous Assamese people including Inner Line Permit system, an upper council, reservation for indigenous people in the local bodies, assembly and Lok Sabha. It also recommended land rights for indigenous people, rights over resources for indigenous people, separate board for preservation of Naamghars and xatras, 4-language formula, sealing the porous border and signing an extradition treaty with Bangladesh among others.
