August 11, 2020: The people under the present Bajali subdivision of Barpeta are jubilant over Monday's cabinet decision announcing it to be a full-fledged district. The council of ministers, chaired by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had decided to upgrade the Bajali sub-division to a full-fledged district.

This was a long pending demand of the people of Bajali. The new district will cover areas under Sarukshetri, Bhabanipur and Patacharkuchi constituencies. For the administrative purpose of the new district, 10 officer level posts and 85 other posts will be created.

The government had earlier in December announced Bajali as a separate district amidst the anti-CAA movement. But there were no celebration at that time as the announcement was seen as a ploy to weaken the movement. However, this time, people of the area have welcomed the government's decision.
