February 16, 2023: The electricity board of Sri Lanka govt hiked power prices up to 275 per cent on Thursday to secure an IMF deal.
Due to financial crisis, Sri Lanka’s 22 million people had suffered food crisis and fuel shortages.
The 275 percent increase in the lowest tariff follows a 264 percent hike that came into effect six months ago.
The Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera said, "We had to raise electricity charges to be in line with IMF conditions that we cannot get handouts from the treasury”. He also said that we need to generate revenues to cover our costs.
