November 13, 2022: Utrecht a city in Netherlands has recently been named the world’s most bike friendly city in 2022 according to Global Bicycle Cities Index, with more than 50% of its population cycling every day.



Utrecht stands tall in first place amongst 90 cities worldwide with a score of 77.84, while the Dutch capital Amsterdam took the fifth place.



Everyone in the Netherlands uses a bicycle. The Netherlands have more than 37,000 km of cycle paths. The country is known as the ‘land of bicycles’ with 23 million bicycles for a population of 17 million.

The first bike path in Netherland started in 1885 in Utrecht. In 2019, the city became the home for world’s largest multi-storey bicycle park with a capacity of 12,500 bikes.



The Global Bicycle Cities Index ranked the cities using six conditions: Weather, Bicycle usage, Crime and safety, Infrastructure, bike sharing opportunities, and awareness events such as “No car day”.
