June 23, 2020: US President Donald Trump on Monday extended the freeze on issuance of "green cards" for new immigrants and suspended range of work visas for foreigners, including all H-1B which is popular among Indian IT professionals, along with other foreign work visas for the rest of the year.

Over 70% of H-1B visas granted each year goes to Indians.

Trump admin order also suspends and limits entry into the US of H-1B, H-2B and L visas and their dependents till December 31, 2020. It also includes certain categories of J visas like an intern, trainee, teacher, camp counsellor, or summer work travel programme.

The suspension will not affect those already in the US on the visas. The Optional Practical Training that most foreign students are eligible for after they graduate in the US also remains unaffected.

Sources said, the step was essential to help millions of Americans who have lost their jobs due to the current economic crisis.
