April 26, 2021: The 93rd Academy Awards, held at Union Station in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, the attendees were seen maintaining social distance and going maskless.
Regina King opened the ceremony as the awards were again hostless this year.
The presenters took the stage to announce the winners and the evening concluded with Joaquin Phoenix announcing the award for Best Actor. While many were rooting for Chadwick Boseman to get honoured, the award was won by Anthony Hopkins for The Father.
Nomadland won big this year. The film won Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloe Zhao.
Chloe is the second woman to win this year in the Academy’s 93 years of giving awards.
Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Soul and Sound of Metal - all won two Oscars each at the ceremony.
Despite the year that was driven by a global pandemic, the films that dominated the award ceremony were quite impressive. Many of these released either in film festivals or streaming platforms.
In the ‘In Memoriam’ section of the 93rd Academy Awards, actor Irrfan Khan and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya were honoured. The two legends passed away in 2020.
