January 4, 2022: Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pernekar said on Tuesday (Jan 4) that lockdown could be imposed in Mumbai if the number of new COVID cases in the Maximum City crossed the 20,000 mark. 



Mumbai on Monday reported 7,928 fresh Covid-19 cases along with 40 new Omicron cases. The test positivity rate was recorded at 16.39 per cent. The city logged two related deaths in the past 24 hours, a BMC health bulletin said. At present there are 37,274 active Covid infections in Mumbai. However, 90% of the patients are asymptomatic, the bulletin further noted. On Sunday, Mumbai had recorded 8,063 Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, 12,160 fresh Covid-19 cases with 60 new Omicron infections were detected in Maharashtra on Monday. The state also reported 11 related deaths and 1,748 recoveries in the past 24 hours. The new detections took the total number of Omicron cases to 578.



Classes 1-9 and Class 11 of BMC-run schools have been shut till January 31.
