November 23, 2024: Indian soldiers operating as part of United Nations peacekeeping missions in Lebanon are safe despite the escalating tensions in the region, the Indian Army confirmed on Friday. Lt. General Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems and Coordination), reassured the public that the Indian peacekeepers deployed in Lebanon's volatile areas are secure and well-protected.

In a statement addressing growing concerns over recent hostilities near deployment zones, Lt. General Kapoor emphasized that the Indian troops remain fully compliant with their UN mandate and are under constant monitoring by the Indian Army's leadership. He also noted that, while India cannot unilaterally decide on evacuating personnel, contingency plans are in place to ensure their swift evacuation if the security situation worsens.

India currently has around 900 soldiers deployed in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a mission aimed at maintaining peace in the region. These peacekeepers are stationed in some of the most sensitive and volatile areas, contributing significantly to India’s standing as one of the world’s largest contributors to UN peacekeeping efforts.

Lt. General Kapoor also underscored India’s broader commitment to global peacekeeping, with more than 5,000 Indian soldiers serving across 10 UN missions worldwide. Since the inception of the UN peacekeeping program, India has participated in 53 out of 72 missions, cementing its role as a key player in international peace and security.
