November 29, 2024: India has been re-elected to serve a term on the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the 2025-2026 period, the country's Permanent Mission to the UN confirmed on Thursday. This comes as India's current term on the commission was set to expire on December 31, 2024.
In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Permanent Mission of India expressed the country's commitment to continuing its active role in global peacebuilding efforts. "India has been re-elected to the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2025-2026. As a founding member and major contributor to @UNPeacekeeping, India is committed to continuing its engagement with the PBC to work towards global peace and stability," the statement read.
The PBC, an intergovernmental advisory body, plays a crucial role in supporting peace efforts in countries affected by conflict. It enhances the international community’s ability to address the broader peace agenda, working closely with other UN entities to foster peace and stability.
The Commission is made up of 31 Member States, which are elected from the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council. The membership also includes countries that are major financial contributors to the UN system and the largest troop contributors to peacekeeping missions.
India's re-election underscores its ongoing commitment to global peace and security, particularly through its active participation in UN peacekeeping and conflict resolution initiatives. The country has long been a key player in fostering international cooperation to tackle the root causes of conflict and promote sustainable peace.
