June 26, 2021: It was an intensely emotional moment for jailed Raijor Dal president and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and his mother. The mother and son on Saturday met for the first time after 18 long months. Gogoi hugged his 84-year old mother and she kissed him as they met in a highly emotionally charged atmosphere.

Throughout his interaction with the media, the newly elected MLA was seen holding on to his mother. “I wanted to meet my mother alone, wanted to rest my head on her lap. My wish was to sleep with her, spend time in solitude with her,” Gogoi said as the meeting happened amid a huge pose of journalists, friends and family members and well-wishers.

“My mother reminds me of Maxim Gorky’s character of mother in his novel of same name…. my mother is my heart and soul,” Gogoi said as he replied to unending series of questions from journalists who did not spare him even for a moment.

“My mother has been suffering from cataract. Her visibility has been poor. My top priority is to speak to the doctor and get her eyes treated,” Gogoi said.

Responding to another question on what he likes the most to eat, Gogoi said that he enjoys his mother’s recipe of mora pat (jute leaves) cooked with bamboo shoot among other delicacies prepared by his mother. “I have been away. I do not know how my mother has been managing things. I am not sure if there has been anyone helping her with the groceries,” a concerned Gogoi said.

Gogoi’s sisters, relatives, local residents and people from his constituency of Sibsagar were waiting for him since morning. The women folk were waiting for the 45-year old activist-politician with a puja thali to welcome him home.

Gogoi left Guwahati at around 7 AM to meet his mother in Jorhat. He reached his Jorhat home at around 12.30 PM.

The NIA court had granted two days parole to peasant leader Gogoi to meet his family members in Guwahati and Jorhat.
