Lovlina Borgohain beats Chinese Taipei's Chin-Chen Nien to qualify for semi-finals and assuring India its second medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020

July 30, 2021: Lovlina Borgohain, the first woman boxer from Assam who qualified for Olympics, beats Chinese Taipei's Chin-Chen Nien 4-1 in women's Welterweight (64-69kg) to qualify for semi-finals assuring India its second medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.



Earlier, weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu had won India its first-ever medal, i.e. a silver medal, with her emphatic win at 49kg on July 24 - the first day of the showpiece event in  Tokyo, Japan.



It may be mentioned that Lovlina has also become just the second woman after Indian legend MC Mary Kom – bronze in the 2012 London Olympics – to qualify for a medal round.





Lovlina was born on 2 October 1997, and hails from the Golaghat district of Assam.

Earlier, Lovlina won gold at 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament, New Delhi, then silver at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament, Guwahati and bronze at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, New Delhi.





She also won bronze at 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Russia.



In 2020, she became the sixth person from Assam to receive Arjuna Award.
