August 23, 2023: At least 17 workers have lost their lives and several others are still feared trapped after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram on Wednesday.

According to some reports, the incident took place near the Sairang area, about 21km away from the state capital Aizawl.

During the incident, a total of 40 workers were working at the construction site of the bridge. The bridge was being built to bring railway connectivity to Aizawl.

Taking to X, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga said, "Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; at least 17 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing them a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations. @RailMinIndia
