April 20, 2022: Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has decided to set up 12 committees, each to be headed by state Cabinet Ministers, to find solution to the age old border dispute between the two states. The decision was taken at the meeting between Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma held in Guwahati today (April 20).
“Arunachal Pradesh has been demanding the transfer of 123 villages to them. It has been decided to set up 12 committees under the chairmanship of 12 Cabinet Ministers to look into the issues and suggest solutions to the border issues. This is in line with how the border dispute is being resolved between Assam and Meghalaya,” Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said briefing the media after the CMs’ meet.
The committees would visit the disputed sites. “It might take time but a solution will be found,” Minister Bora said.
Assam CM Sarma had earlier told the Assam Assembly that there are 1,200 places of dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Arunachal Pradesh was carved out of Assam and the two states share a boundary of over 800 km. Arunachal Pradesh has boundary disputes in 12 districts bordering Assam and Assam has border issues with Arunahcal Pradesh in 8 districts, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Khandu said.
