July 26, 2021: Happy about the stupendous performance of weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said today that she will be appointed as Addl.SP (Sports) in the Home Department of the state. She would also get Rs one crore for winning the silver medal.

In 2015, Chanu was appointed as honorary Senior Ticket Collector, under Lumding Division in North-East Frontier Railway. She is from Laimaning, District in Imphal East in Manipur.

Chanu sprung to international fame at 20 when she won the silver medal in the 48-kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, UK.

She won gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships and the 2018 Glasglow Commonwealth Games. She is a Padma Shri and Rajiv Gangh Khel Ratna awardee.

She now stands a chance of winning the gold in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 as anti-dope test has been ordered against Chinese weightlifter and gold medallist Zhihui Hou.

Olympian Sushila Likmabam will be promoted from police constable to Sub Inspector rank and will receive Rs 35 lakh, the CM said. Sushila lost in the first round of Judo in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
