November 22, 2022: Four people, including a forest guard, were killed in a firing at the Assam-Meghalaya border after the police followed a truck transporting illegal timber in early hours of Tuesday.



The truck was intercepted on the Meghalaya border by Assam Forest Department team at around 3 AM.



As the truck tried to flee from the scene, the forest guards fired at it and punctured the tyre. The driver, a handyman and another person were arrested, while others managed to escape.

At around 5 AM, the police reached the site and a large number of locals from Meghalaya armed with sharp weapons gathered demanding the immediate release of the arrested.



One forest home guard and three persons of the Khasi community were killed in the operation.



However, it is not clear how the forest guard, identified as Bidyasing Lekhte, was killed.
