Republic Day Red Fort violence accused Gurjot Singh arrested by Special Cell of Delhi Police from Amritsar in Punjab

June 28, 2021: Gurjot Singh, one accused in connection to the Republic Day Red Fort violence, has been arrested by Special Cell of Delhi Police from Amritsar in Punjab.



On Republic Day, 2021, the farmers, who were protesting against the three farm laws passed by the Centre, did not follow the prearranged route and broke barricades to enter Delhi, clashed with police, and vandalised property in several parts of the national capital.



Even though they had also entered the Red Fort and unfurled their flags from its ramparts.





Gurjot Singh had allegedly hoisted a religious flag at Red Fort on Republic Day, 2021.



Speaking to ANI, Police informed, "One person namely Gurjot Singh, who was wanted in FIR number 96/21 ( Red Fort case) and a reward of Rs 1 lakh has been declared on his arrest, has been arrested by a team of Northern Region (NR) of special cell from Amritsar, Punjab".

A total of 43 different cases were registered with the crime branch, special cell, and local Police and over 150 persons were arrested in connection with various cases relating to the violence.





Reportedly, a total of 17 accused including Deep Sidhu, who was accused of being the key conspirator of the violence, have been named in the 3,224 page-long first chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police in the matter.



Earlier, Sidhu was arrested on February 9 and police had also accused him of fuelling the chaos at the Red Fort.



Farmers have been protesting at the different borders of the national capital since November 26, 2021 against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
