July 6, 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee, on his 120th birth anniversary.

Remembering the remarkable scholar and intellectual, the Prime Minister said Mukherjee devoted his life towards India's unity and progress.

"I bow to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Jayanti. His lofty ideals motivate millions across our nation. Dr Mookerjee devoted his life towards India's unity and progress. He also distinguished himself as a remarkable scholar and intellectual," the PM tweeted.

Mukherjee (1901-1953), who was a politician, barrister and academician, served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.

Mukherjee was born in a Bengali Brahmin family on 6 July 1901 in Calcutta (Kolkata). His family originally hailed from Jirat, Hooghly District, West Bengal.

He was also the president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946. He died in the custody of Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1953. He was provisionally diagnosed of a heart attack and shifted to a hospital but died a day later.

In 2004, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had claimed that he was murdered in a "Nehru conspiracy". Since the Bharatiya Janata Party is the successor to the Bhartiya Jana Sangh, Mukherjee is also regarded as the founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
