Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully but failed to lift 89kg

July 24, 2021: India won its first medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020. Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu has become the first athlete to win medal for the country at this global sporting event. Chanu won the silver in women's 49kg category.  China's Zhihu Hou took the gold. Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully but failed to lift 89kg.



This is India’s first medal in weightlifting in Olympics since 2004.



Chanu, 26, has won silver medal at the 2014 Glasglow Commonwealth Games. She won gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships and another gold at the 2018 Glasglow Commonwealth Games.



She has been honoured with Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.
