September 9, 2021: By-polls to fill six vacant Rajya Sabha seats of 5 states would be held on October 4, the Election Commission announced today. Counting would take place the same day.





Elections would be held for two seats from Tamil Nadu and one seat each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.



In Assam, by-polls would be held to fill the seat lying vacant after Biswajit Daimary won the Assembly elections in April this year and became MLA from Paneri on a BJP ticket. Daimary is now the Speaker of Assam Assembly.





Daimary’s Rajya Sabha term would have ended in April 9, 2026.
