Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday extended her support to the women's reservation bill in Lok Sabha

September 20, 2023: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday extended her support to the women's reservation bill in Lok Sabha during the debate on the legislation.

According to the Constitution 108th Women Reservation Bill, 2008, women should be given a third (33%) of the seats in state legislative assemblies and the Parliament. Within the 33% quota, the law suggests sub-reservation for SCs, STs, and Anglo-Indians. Rotational allocation of reserved seats is an option for several state or union territory constituencies.

The Congress parliamentary party chief said, “On behalf of Indian National Congress, I stand in support of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023”.

Sonia Gandhi said, “It was Rajiv ji's dream". She added, “This is an emotional moment of my own life as well. For the first time, the Constitutional amendment to decide women's representation in local body election was brought by my life partner Rajiv Gandhi. It was defeated in Rajya Sabha by 7 votes."
