Alpha Particle X-ray Spectroscope (APXS) has detected Sulphur as well as other minor elements

August 31, 2023: India’s Chandrayaan-3 rover confirmed the presence of Sulphur (S) on the moon's South Pole, through first-ever in-situ measurements.

Taking to X, ISRO tweeted, "Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) instrument onboard the Rover unambiguously confirms the presence of Sulphur (S) in the lunar surface near the south pole, through first-ever in-situ measurements."

The LIBS instrument was developed at the Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS)/ISRO in Bengaluru.

ISRO also confirmed that Al, Ca, Fe, Cr, Ti, Mn, Si, and O are also detected, as expected. The search for Hydrogen (H) is still underway.
