August 28, 2020: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma on Friday distributed appointment letters to 5 thousand regular teachers of upper and lower primary schools of Assam.
Addressing the newly-recruited teachers at the programme held at Sankardev Kalakhetra, the chief minister called upon the teachers to dedicate themselves for nurturing human resources. He also lauded the various departments and the public for their cooperation in the fight against Covid19.

Education minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced that 10 to 20 thousand more teachers will be recruited before April, 2021. Of these, 10,000 are likely to be recruited in September. In a veiled attack on his predecessor Sidhdhartha Bhattacharys, Sharma said that during the latter's tenure, no fresh appointments were made in the department. In fact, he said without naming Bhattacharya that only files of transfers were processed during that time. The minister claimed that it was after his second term in the department that fresh recruitment process has started again.

Altogether 5,315 teachers were given appointment letters on Friday. The chief minister started the process by pressing a button. While some were invited to collect their appointment letters physically, the rest can download the same online from Friday itself.
